Something always works out! Giving up is not an option. And so, once again, we’ve readjusted ourselves, fine-tuned all our senses, and refreshed our briefing. Or something like that. Properly cheered up, we’re obviously not going to miss out on the music that follows – and neither should you. After all, the music has to be somewhere.
LINDSEY WEBSTER has (re)discovered the musical stylings for her new album deep within herself and now sets the direction for her first record in quite some time with „Music In Me„. How nice that she continues exactly where we last left off with her: elevated, soulful, jazzy, pop-tinged, and perfectly tempered, of course.
HONOR CARR, together with her chosen partner, moves through imaginary space on a perfectly placed mid-tempo groove. „U&I „is R&B of the finer kind – perhaps also thanks to those tiny pop concessions sprinkled in between.
If that’s still not your thing, we recommend some down-to-earth retro soul-pop, which, as we know, always reaches us in special quality when treated by MT JONES. And for those who still don’t get it, we urgently recommend „I Don’t Understand„.
And if your spirits are still feeling a little low, we wholeheartedly suggest the new album „Dance Para se Selvar“ by Brazilian producer DIOGO STRAUSZ. Wonderfully upbeat dance tracks somewhere between disco and 70s jazz-funk-soul – always with laid-back Rio beats in reserve and a lifestyle compass firmly set to cheerful optimism on the dashboard.

Derart aufgemuntert lassen wir uns die nachfolgenden Musiken natürlich nicht entgehen. Das solltet ihr selbstredend ebenso halten. Denn irgendwo muss sie doch sein, die Musik. LINDSEY WEBSTER hat sie die Musik-Stylings für ihr neues Album tief in sich (wieder-)entdeckt, und gibt nun mittels „Music In Me“ die Richtung für ihre erste Platte nach längerer Zeit vor. Wie gut, dass sie genau an dem Punkt weitermacht, wo wir sie zuletzt gehört hatten. Übergeordnet, mit Soul, Jazz, Pop, bestens temperiert natürlich. – HONOR CARR bewegt sich mit dem Partner ihrer Wahl auf bestens verortetem Midtempo-Groove durch den imaginären Raum. „U&I“ ist RnB der besseren Art, vielleicht auch wegen der klitzekleinen Pop-Zugeständnissen zwischendrin. – Wem hierfür das Verständnis fehlt, dem raten wir zu bodenständigem Retro-Soul-Pop, der bekanntermaßen durch die Behandlung durch den MT JONES stets mit in besonderer Qualität zu uns kommt. Wer’s nicht versteht, dem empfehlen wir dringend „I Don’t Understand“. – Wem jetzt immer noch ein wenig flau rund ums Gemüt sein sollte, dem sei das neue Album „Dance Para se Selvar“ des brasilianischen Produzenten DIOGO STRAUSZ ganz fest ans Herz gelegt. Bestens aufgelegte Tanz-Nummern, irgendwo zwischen Disco und 70er Jazz-Funk-Soul. Phew! What a pointless fuss. At this point I am, of course, not talking about experiences in the glamorous towns of neighboring Switzerland, but about private circumstances that really ought to ensure that these lines make the rounds once again at the right time.
Well then, we’re in it now – just a few minutes left on the clock until editorial deadline. Reason enough to give ourselves a proper push from DJ HARRISON’s “Electric Soul” department. His new album is filled to the brim with jazz and funk and soul, hip-hop and all sorts of other sound worlds that somehow and at some point blend in as well. Highly focused, creative, and exciting. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Yazmin Lacey, Yaya Bey, Grebes, Kiefer, and other friends add their highly aromatic mustard to the mix. Guaranteed spiciness.
And after listening again and confirming that, with DJ HARRISON, absolutely anything really is possible, we’ll also let the esteemed CLEO SOL make a statement. As usual, with the by-now hardly surprising surprise effect of consistent non-announcement, we now get a new song from Cleo as well, following last week’s new SAULT album. “Nothing Is Impossible With You” calmly draws its lines, leaving plenty of space and freedom for piano and voice over a metronomic click beat and a grumbling bass.
And yet another solitaire: DURAND JONES and his INDICATIONS once again frame Aaron Frazer’s falsetto voice with refined retro soul in the most beautiful colors. “Let’s Take Our Time” for the better moments in life.
With considerably more steam behind it, KURT ELLING makes himself heard again. With the concentrated power of the WDR BIG BAND (thanks be to the broadcasting fees!) at his back, Kurt pays his last respects to the recently deceased arranger Jim McNeely, sending the band sledding along with us. Originally John Scofield’s “Jeep on 35,” it has now become “My Very Own Ride” thanks to lyrics by Nina Clark.

Puuh! Was für eine sinnlose Aufregung. Ich spreche an dieser Stelle selbstverständlich nicht über Erlebnisse in mondänen Gemeinden der benachbarten Schweiz, sondern von privaten Umständen, die eigentlich dafür Sorge tragen sollten, dass diese Zeilen ein weiteres Mal zur passenden Zeit ihre Runden drehen. Nun gut, wir sind dabei, ein paar Minuten bis zum Redaktionsschluß sind noch auf der Uhr verblieben – Gund genug, um uns mittels eines ordentlichen Schubs aus der „Electric Soul“ Abteilung des DJ HARRISON. Dessen neues Albums ist bis an den Rand gefüllt mit Jazz und Funk und Soul HipHop und sonstigen Klangwelten, die sich irgendwie und irgendwann daruntermischen. Hochgradig konzentriert, kreativ und spannend. Miguel Atwood-Atwood-Ferguson, Yazmin Lacey, Yaya Bey, Grebes, Kiefer und weitere Freunde geben ihren hocharomatischen Senf dazu. Schärfegrad garantiert. – Und nachdem wir jetzt noch einmal nachhören konnten, dass beim DJ HARRISON tatsächlich alles möglich ist, lassen wir die verehrte CLEO SOL dazu noch ein Statement abgeben. Wie gewohnt mit dem kaum mehr überraschenden Überraschungseffekt der konsequenten Nicht-Ankündigung, gibt’s nun nach dem neuen SAULT Album der Vorwoche auch noch einen neuen Song von deren Cleo. „Nothing Is Impossible With You“ zieht in beständiger Ruhe seine Linien, die auf metrischem Klick-Beat und brummelndem Bass genügend Raum und Freiheit für Piano und Stimme lassen. – Und noch ein Solitär. DURAND JONES und seine INDICATIONS umrahmen ein weiteres mal die die Falsett-Stimme ihre Aaron Frazer mit gediegenem Retro-Soul in den schönsten Tönen. „Let’s Take Our Time“ für die besseren Momente im Leben. – Mit wesentlich mehr Dampf läßt der KURT ELLING wieder von sich hören. Mit der geballten Kraft der WDR BIG BAND (den Rundfunkgebühren sei’s gedankt!) im Rücken gibt der Kurt dem kürzlich verstorbenen Arrangeur Jim McNeely die letzte Ehre, und lässt so die Band mit uns gemeinsam Schlittenfahren. Monday’s record! And so, the good SAMM HENSHAW casts only a mildly enthusiastic glance past the attentive listener. Worn down, and teetering on the edge of hopeful despair, because ‘It Could Be Worse.’ Which is true, of course — things can always get worse. But with the wonderfully warm soul music Samm now offers us, mustering every last reserve, we can confidently defy the here and now. At least in a more private setting. Well‑tempered, always with a tempting hookline up his sleeve. Rounded off with a warming retro finish that, on closer listening, flashes with contemporary touches from all directions. A good album — and recommended for the rest of the week as well.

Montags-Platte! Entsprechend wenig begeistert schaut der gute SAMM HENSHAW am geneigten Hörer vorbei. Geschunden, und mit an Hoffnung grenzender Verzweiflung, denn „It Could Be Worse“. Das stimmt natürlich, schlimmer geht immer. Aber mit den rundum wohlklingenden Soul-Musiken, die uns der Samm unter Aufbietung sämtlicher Reserven nunmehr anbietet, können wir getrost dem Hier und Jetzt trotzen. Zumindest im privateren Rahmen. Gut temperiert, stets mit einer lockenden Hookline in der Hinterhand. Dazu mit erwärmendem Retro-Finish, dem bei genauerem Hinhören die Aktualität aus vielerlei Richtungen entgegenblinkt. Gutes Album – auch für den Rest der Woche empfehlenswert.
Sabine is helping! How nice. Let’s see if it holds. Otherwise, we’ll go with NATE SMITH this weekend, who has now added a so-called deluxe edition to his genre-crossing Live-Action album. It includes some new tracks, a few instrumentals, and with “All Is Fine” also our motto for the days (and nights). Nate grooves, MELANIE CHARLES sings. Good! — Now let’s not get annoyed, OK? So we’re making another attempt to keep calm and stay composed, and to that end we put on, of all things, the nervously blinking “Traffic Lights” by FLEA, who until now we’d mainly remembered for his sock. Oh well. Now, with his kind of jazz, bass and trumpet refuse to let up, the guitar plinks and plonks in between, while Radiohead’s THOM YORKE plays the traffic-light man. Special. With prolonged head-nodding, the light now turns green. DESTIN CONRAD also put forward his own jazz claims with “Whimsy.” We were happy to hear that, and are pleased about another single that sounds as if it might have sprung from the album sessions. TERRACE MARTIN chips in with his Crenshaw soul credentials, and together with “Nothing Is Real” helps us escape reality. Let’s also ask what circumstances once prompted the Norwegian Morten Martens, as a maker of blue-eyed sweet soul, to take on the name LES IMPRIMÉS. Let’s see if we can come up with a plausible answer. But really, it hardly matters, as long as the man carries such finely tailored soul-pop bliss as “You & I” in his quiver of songs. Right?

Ansonsten halten wir’s an diesem Wochenende mit dem NATE SMITH, der seinem stil-übergreifendem „Live-Action“ Album jetzt auch noch eine sogenannte Deluxe-Auflage angehängt hat. Darin finden sich einige neue Tracks, einige Instrumentals und mit „All Is Fine“ eben auch unser Motto für die Tage (und Nächte). Nate groovt, MELANIE CHARLES singt. Gut! – Jetzt nur nicht ärgern, OK? Wir unternehmen also einen weiteren Versuch, Ruhe und Haltung zu bewahren, und legen dazu ausgerechnet die nervös blinkenden „Traffic Lights“ von FLEA auf, der uns bis dato eigentlich nur wegen seiner Socke in Erinnerung geblieben ist. Nun denn. Jetzt mit seiner Art vom Jazz, Bass und Trompete lassen nicht locker, die Gitarre plickt und plackt zwischendrin, während der Radiohead THOM YORKE den Ampelmann spielt. Speziell. Mit langanhaltendem Kopfnicken leuchtet das Licht jetzt grün. – Auch der DESTIN CONRAD stellte mittels „Whimsy“ eigene Jazz-Behauptungen in den Raum. Wir hörten das gern, und freuen uns über eine weitere Single, die klingt, als ob sie aus den Album-Sessions entsprungen sein könnte. TERRACE MARTIN gibt dazu seine Crenshaw-Soul-Karte ab, um gemeinsam mit „Nothing Is Real“ der Wirklichkeit zu entkommen. – Fragen wir mal nach, welche Umständen Norweger Morten Martens einst bewogen haben als Blue-Eyed-Sweet-Soul-Macher den Namen LES IMPRIMÉS anzunehmen. Mal sehen, ob wir eine plausible Antwort einfahren können. Eigentlich aber auch einerlei, solange der Mann so fein situierten Soul-Pop Wohlklang wie „You & I“ im Song-Köcher bei sich trägt. Stimmt’s?
Right in the thick of it. And already time for some better dance tunes. Of course we’re in. Lord knows there’s enough bad stuff going on everywhere. So it’s great that two women we really rate are serving up some good beats in the middle of the week. EGO ELLA MAY brings some stripped-down drum’n’bass with a Nu-soul/jazz vibe. Her new album Good Intentions drops on March 20. Not long after that, ARLO PARKS follows with Ambiguous Desire. Arlo’s getting into dancing too these days – different places, different sounds and grooves, always hanging out at the dance bar, always with shimmering electronics and tight machines in the studio. “I danced more than ever while making this record” – and with 2Sided she shows us exactly what fun sounds like.

More jazz than soul — but unmistakably Roderick Harper!
Das fängt ja gut an! RODERICK HARPER besitzt genügend Selbstvertrauen, um sein neues Album als erstes in den 2026er Ring zu werfen. Gute Entscheidung! Denn mittels „Confidence“ legt er die Latte für die Vocal-Jazz-Konkurrenz schon mal auf eine ansehnliche Höhe. Klassisches Instrumentarium, wirkungsvolle Songs, Arrangements zwischen Spannung und Eleganz. Mehr Jazz als Soul, aber eben Roderick Harper!

It turned out the way it had to. Planned and executed. Fits. Everyone’s talking about the weather — so are we! Just to spare ourselves further hassle with updates and the blocks, formatting, or code that come with them. We almost pulled it off, at least until SAULT crossed our plans with their “Chapter 1.”
Of course, there’s no connection. It just happened. Planned by Inflo and his Cleo, but for us it still came out of the blue. A ten-pack of fresh songs, peppered with those typically Sault-ish moments that may hardly surprise anymore, yet still sit comfortably and fit well. Overall, it’s almost a bit rough around the edges, with the occasional raw cut. Also worth mentioning is the involvement of Minneapolis gentlemen Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. So far, so good.
— Only a stone’s throw away. So to speak. CARWYN ELLIS & RIO 18 are, as is well known, always good for a fusion of the Welsh language with the many beauties of contemporary Latin sounds. On “Shades Of Red,” NINA MIRANDA sings in the more internationally familiar English, while the band, in the opening sequence, seamlessly picks up on the Sault blueprint.
— SAMM HENSHAW has for some time now been an important voice of newer soul from London and its surroundings. With “Hair Down,” he asks the woman of his heart for the well-known Rapunzel gesture, setting it to a laid-back, head-nodding groove that’s hard to resist.
— More pressure, despite a relaxed beat and cushioning horn arrangements. JILL SCOTT states clearly what’s on and what’s not. “To Whom It May Concern” will be the new album, available from February 13 onward.

Elli kam, wie sie kommen musste. Geplant und durchgeführt. Passt. Alle redn vom Wetter – wir eben auch! Nur um uns weitere Scherereien mit Updates, und den damit in Zusammenhang stehenden, Blöcken, Formatierungen oder Codes zu ersparen. Das ist uns fast gelungen, zumindest bis zu dem Zeitpunkt an dem uns SAULT mit ihrem „Chapter1“ den Plan durchkreuzten.
Natürlich gibt es keinen Zusammenhang. Es ist einfach so passiert. Geplant vom Inflo, und seiner Cleo, aber für uns dann eben doch wie aus heiterem Himmel. Ein Zehner-Pack mit frischen Songs, gespickt mit den Sault’schen Momenten, die zwar kaum mehr überraschen, aber dennoch angenehm in Sitz und Passform sind. Insgesamt schon fast ein wenig ungehobelt, dann und wann mit rauer Kante. Erwähnenswert finden wir zudem die Mitwirkung der Herren Terry Lewis und Jimmy Jam aus Minneapolis. So weit, so gut. – Nur einen Steinwurf entfern. Sozusagen. CARWYN ELLIS & RIO 18 sind bekanntermaßen immer für eine Fusion der walisischen Sprache mit den mannigfaltigen Schönheiten zeitgenössischer Latin-Sounds gut. Für „Shades Of Red“ singt NINA MIRANDA im international geläufigeren Englisch, während die Band in der Anfangssequenz in perfekter Manier an die Sault-Vorgaben anknüpft. – SAMM HENSHAW gilt uns schon seit geraumer Zeit als wichtige Stimme des neueren Soul aus London, und Umgebung. So better get straight to the music—starting with JILL SCOTT, who after a ten-year studio hiatus launches a new album right out of the gate. Her “Beautiful People” drift along on a free groove over which she tells her story. Naturally good. Then, in a very traditional vein, TRACY CRUZ comes along—a soulful below-midtempo sway, soul with style and, of course, a hint of jazz. More storytelling. This time from London: AANYA MARTIN is “Colder Than Most,” while the bass draws its line, a piano wanders about, and the beat clicks and clacks. Worth a listen.
