Weit weg, statt nur dabei. Hör-Möglichkeiten eingeschränkt, oder nicht vorhanden. Ein perfekter Grund, um mal wieder der Schreibblockade freien Lauf zu lassen. Wenn’s immer so einfach wäre, dann könnten wir auch mal JALEN NGONDA sein, dem nachweislich ein potentieller Soul-Klassiker, nach dem anderen, aus der Feder rinnt. „Hang It On The Shelf“ hat also wieder Stil, Klasse, Melodie und Rhythmus. – Die Smith-Brothers machen’s mal wieder als SONS OF SEVILLA, stammen aber natürlich aus dem britischen Leeds, und haben sich ihr wunderbares „Forever Heaven“ in New Jersey vom Max Shrager betreuen lassen. „Emotionally Stirring, Infectious & Inspiring“, behauptet das Brüderpaar. Wir schließen uns dem nahtlos an. – Gilt im besonderen Maße auch für den wirkungsvoll reduzierten „Blackthorne“, über dessen Takt die KONYIKEH einmal mehr ihre vokale Präsenz von wehenden Chören umgarnen lässt. Beeindruckend. – Über das Album des SHAWN RIVERA wäre schon fast ein wenig Gras gewachsen, wenn der jetzt glücklicherweise wieder aktive Simon Manni nicht den Mantel des Schweigens gelüftet hätte. Der Shawn nennt einige Erfahrungswerte sein eigen (AZ Yet, Babyface, Maya Angelou…), kommt aber erst jetzt mit einem Debut-Album um die Ecke. Perfekt ausbalancierte RnB-Spezialitäten, die der Shawn auch gern mal mit Andenken an D’Angelo (oder gar an Jarrod Lawson) und ähnlich gelagerte Musiken, anreichert. Dabei hat ausgerechnet „Doesn’t Matter“ unsere gesamte Aufmerksamkeit.
The next summer is bound to come. At least into the home playback device. And of course back out again. All thanks to a few sunny, easy-going beats from today’s four-piece crew. A Latin‑tinted foundation, naturally with a high‑gloss jazz appeal. And one of those irresistible sound patterns from Bluey Maunick’s workshop can hardly be harmed by a rap interlude. You can hear it on “Kinetic”, a collaboration between the Japanese band KROI and the worldly Brits. Super‑sunny is surely what the upcoming album from MUCA & ROBERTO MENESCAL will be. On the current sunbeam called “Every Little Thing”, SAHRA lets all her charm unfold. With BANDA MAJE and MOYSES DOS SANTOS, the circle of sunshine closes — the connection between São Paulo and Salerno is alive, and now it may, no, it must be danced!

Der nächste Sommer kommt bestimmt. Zumindest ins heimische Abspielgerät. Und natürlich von dort auch wieder raus. Ganz einfach via ein paar sonnige-lockere Beatz unserer heutigen Vierer-Bande. Latin-getünchte Unterlage, selbstredend mit hochglänzendem Jazz-Appeal. Und einem dieser unwiderstehlichen Sound-Schemen aus der Werkstatt des Bluey Maunick kann auch eine Rap-Einlage kaum Schaden zufügen. Nachzuhören bei „Kinetic“, einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen der japanischen Band KROI und den weltgewandten Briten. – Obersonnig wird sicher das bevorstehende Album von MUCA & ROBERTO MENESCAL werden. Love. Everything between beginning and end. From “Take My Love” to “Divided.” Including various shades in between, ranging from “Mudbrown” to “No Te Vayas.” But before we wear ourselves out all over again, let’s leave the daily grind to others and rely instead on the soothing power of music. So let’s start with a few carefree beats from JULIAN JONAH, who has long stood for dance‑floor quality in Brit‑Soul. ROBBIE LOVE sings “Take My Love,” while the dance steps glide across the floor as if guided by magic. — Let’s stay loose and follow SPARKLMAMI, who calls out “No Te Vayas” to us with optimistic exuberance. Late‑70s soul‑jazz vibes with a subtle Latin foundation. Not far from the achievements of EW&F. For us, a sure reason to stay. — At some point, though, it’s time for “Midbrown.” Responsible for that is KUMAIL — singer‑songwriter‑producer, but in his own way. His songwriting leans on groove and grooves, with neo‑alternative R&B sounds and some kind of jazz lingering in the finish. Guaranteed intriguing. At least for here and now. — Today’s final word goes to KEA, who positions her “Divided” somewhere between an almost rough funk attitude and a sweet‑soul chorus — and lands exactly where she should. We’re definitely on her side.
Die Liebe. Alles zwischen Anfang und Ende. Von „Take My Love“ zu „Divided“. Inklusive diverse Zwischentöne, die von „Mudbrown“ bis zu „No Te Vayas“ reichen. Doch bevor wir uns ein weiteres Mal rundum aufreiben, überlassen wir das tägliche Sein den anderen und verlassen uns lieber auf die wohltuende Wirkung der Musik. Zum Start also ein paar ausgelassene Beatz vom JULIAN JONAH, der seit geraumer Zeit für tanzende Qualität im Brit-Soul steht. „Take My Love“ singt die ROBBIE LOVE dazu, während die Tanzschritte geradezu wie von Zauberhand geführt über die Fläche gleiten. – Bleiben wir locker, und folgen der SPARKLMAMI wenn sie uns mit optimistischem Überschwang „No Te Vayas“ zuruft. End-70iger-Soul-Jazz-Stimmung mit dezentem Latin-Unterbau. Nicht weit von den EW&F Errungenschaften. Für uns ein sicherer Grund zu bleiben. – Irgendwann ist’s aber Zeit für „Midbrown“. Verantwortlich dafür zeichnet der KUMAIL – Singer-Songwriter-Produzent, aber eben anders. Sein Liedgut setzt auf Groove und Grooves, mit neo-alternativen RnB Sounds und irgendeiner Art von Jazz im Abgang. Garantiert spannend. Zumindest für hier und jetzt. – Das heutige Schlusswort überlassen wir KEA, die ihr „Divided“ zwischen einer fast schon rüden Funk-Attitüde und einem Sweet-Soul-Chorus positioniert, und damit natürlich genau richtig liegt. Wir sind jedenfalls auf ihrer Seite.
Anything to report? Beautiful music in difficult times. Worrying, at the very least. Retreating to one’s own little patch of home as the royal road. But with a decent local supplier within walking distance. And then a few overarching songs that focus solely on melody and rhythm, refusing to be bothered by limitations. Andy Platts shows this in exemplary fashion, letting his MAMAS GUN circle outward. Pop and soul, perfectly wrapped in carefully arranged soundscapes. “Dig!” is the new album. Here and now, everywhere and tomorrow. An ideal companion. — The same goes for “Outsider”, the album by TIWAYO, who had his retro‑soul songs dressed up by Adrian Quesada. A few Latin touches, a bit of rock, soul in voice and presence, and an “Unchained Lovers” duet with KENDRA MORRIS to stay on everyone’s lips. — And since its release in 2025, the “Whimsy” album by DESTIN CONRAD has naturally been right there as well. The R&B man with jazz feelings. And those need to be let out from time to time. A good thing! Even if the jazz appears mostly as a welcome marginal note, it’s the combination Conrad devised—moderate alternative R&B sounds, always in a softly padded ambience, with seemingly random jazzy elements wandering through—that makes it work. And the newly available Deluxe Edition now adds seven new songs. — SLOWE makes clever songs. Mostly slow… of course! The new album is about to launch; as its third preview, we now get “Temporary (You’ll Be Gone)”, whose rhythmic layer even features some lively percussion to lighten the mood. A click, a clack, a handful of jazz aspects (you just can’t do without!), guitar and electric piano slipping by to accompany the vocals/bass scenery for a moment. Currently right at the front of the pack.

Gibt’s was zu melden? Schöne Musiken in schlechten Zeiten. Bedenklich, zumindest. Rückzug auf die heimische Scholle als Königsweg. Aber mit vernünftigem Nahversorger in Laufweite. Dazu dann noch ein paar übergeordnete Songs, die sich einzig auf Melodie und Rhythmus besinnen, ohne sich von Begrenzungen beirren zu lassen. Geradezu exemplarisch lässt der Andy Platts seine MAMAS GUN ihre Kreise ziehen. Pop und Soul, perfekt eingetütet inmitten sorgfältig arrangierter Sound-Kulissen. „Dig!“ ist das neue Album dazu. Hier und jetzt, überall und morgen. Eine ideale Begleitung. – Gilt auch für das „Outsider“ Album des TIWAYO, der seine retro-soulistischen Songs von Adrian Quesada in Schale werfen ließ. Ein paar Latin-Tupfer, ein wenig mit Rock, dazu Soul in Stimme und Auftreten, und ein „Unchained Lovers“ Duett mit KENDRA MORRIS, um in aller Munde zu bleiben. – Dort befindet sich seit seiner Veröffentlichung in 2025 natürlich auch das „Whimsy“ Album vom DESTIN CONRAD. Der RnB-Mann mit Jazz-Gefühlen. Und die müssen eben dann und wann mal rausgelassen werden. Gute Sache! Auch wenn der Jazz eigentlich nur als gern genommene Randnotiz daherkommt, macht’s die vom Destin ersonnene Kombi aus moderaten RnB-Sounds der alternativen Art – stets in weich gepolstertem Ambiente, und mit scheinbar zufällig umherstreunenden Jazzy-Sounds. Und die jetzt verfügbare Deluxe Edition bietet nun gleich 7 neue Songs dazu. – SLOWE macht schlaue Songs. Vorwiegend slow…natürlich! Das neue Album steht alsbald am Start, als dritten Vorboten daraus gibt’s jetzt „Temporary (You’ll Be Gone)“, auf dessen Rhythmus-Ebene gar ein paar flotte Percussions für aufgelockerte Stimmung sorgen. Ein Klick, ein Klack, eine Handvoll Aspekte vom Jazz (ohne geht’s eben nicht!), Gitarre und E-Piano schnurpsen mal vorbei, um die Vocals/Bass-Szenerie temporär zu begleiten. Zurzeit ganz vorn dabei.

CRACKAZAT and GARETH DONKIN wrap real songs in nimble electronic grooves. BRIAN JACKSON wisely relies on the strength of the Scott‑Heron originals, which — in the razor‑sharp treatment by Masters At Work — swing through time with effortless modernity, and in this case are even crowned by the vocals of the great LISA FISCHER.
More old‑school wrapped in modern tech comes from LORD FUNK, who uses “Next To You” not only to spark his new album but also, apparently, to decisively influence your next game night.
